ADVANTAGE MULTI is not ADVANTAGE. The manufacturer of Advantage has taken moxidectin, a product new to small animal use in this county (it has been used in Europe for over 6 years) and added it to Advantage, the flea control product. In combination this product will control or prevent Heartworm, Hookworm, Roundworm, Whipworm and Fleas. If your dog has tick problems, or may be exposed to ticks, you should also treat with VECTRA 3D. It is best to use VECTRA 3D two weeks after application of Advantage Multi to optimize flea control.

In cats, Advantage multi kills fleas and prevents heartworm, hookworm, roundworm and ear mites. This makes it my preferred product for parasite control in cats. The only common parasite it does not control is tapeworm. Removing fleas helps prevent tapeworm. Should tapeworms be seen, topical treatment with Profender dewormer is indicated.

VECTRA 3D is a topical product that kills and repels fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. If Advantage Multi and Vectra 3D are used alternately every two weeks (Advantage Multi on the 1st of the month and Vectra 3D on the 15th), superior levels of flea control are achieved. Clients are reporting that tick control with Vectra 3D is excellent. As with all topical medication, bathing is best done 2 to 3 days before or after application.

Sentinel is used in dogs for the prevention of Heartworm, Hookworm, Roundworm & Whipworm and it will also sterilize fleas. It is excellent for the control of the majority of the internal parasites and also breaks the life cycle to help control fleas. It should be given 1X each month on the same day every month and is given with a meal. It can safely be given early (less than 30 days) but should not be given late or effectiveness may be lost.

Heartgard Plus is similar to Sentinel but costs less because it does less. Control of Whipworms and Fleas is lost when using this product.

FRONTLINE PLUS is for use with either Advantage Multi, Sentinel or Heartgard Plus. In most cases Sentinel alone will not give adequate flea control. Frontline Plus, like VECTRA 3D, has the additional benefit of also controlling ticks.

Frontline Plus is given monthly and can be given at the same time as Sentinel or Heartgard Plus. If used with Advantage Multi, best to give one product on the 1st of the month and the other on the 15th.For Frontline to be most effective it should not be given in within 2 to 3 days of bathing your dog. While it will still work, it will not work as well. Because Frontline is fat soluble and sits in the hair follicle and skin glands (it is not absorbed unlike some other topical products), it can not “hang around” as long if the hair coat oils have been removed by bathing.

All oral products have the disadvantage of potential unrecognized loss after administration. With topical products the delivery is guaranteed but for a day or two they can leave the hair coat looking oily at the application site.

REVOLUTION is the cat’s meow for control of parasites in cats. It will prevent and control Heartworm, hookworm, roundworm, fleas and ear mites. Unfortunately it does not do all of that in dogs or it would be a fantastic product. For some clients it is an option. Appreciate that some cats (my own) do not like this product. Also appreciate that some cats don’t like anything. Rarely, I have seen hair loss at the site of application. This may happen inconsistently in some animals.

CAPSTAR is a tablet that can be given to dogs or cats to quickly kill fleas. It starts working in 20 minutes and nearly 100% of the fleas will be dead in 2 hours. The down side is there is no residual activity. After 6-8 hours a flea that jumps on your pet will no longer be affected. A good product with limited use. Ever try to pill a cat?

PROFENDER is a new product for deworming cats. Unlike oral products, only a single treatment is required, not two. Since it is applied topically to the back of the neck, there is no issue with trying to pill or place medication in the food. Profender removes hookworm, roundworm and tapeworm. Not evaluated for use in pregnancy or during lactation.
